VOLUNTEER
The National Day of Prayer Task Force for Denton County is busy at work planning this event from the end of January to the first Thursday in May. They work in many different aspects and venues in order to produce the event you see here. An average of 500 people attend this event every year.
The National Day of Prayer event for Denton County requires a large number of people and groups who participate to make this event happen. We welcome individuals and church groups to help assist us on the day of the event. Jobs, such as greeters, ushers, set-up and tear down crews, are some of the areas in which help is needed.

DENTON COUNTY TASK FORCE
On May 16, 1776, as the colonists struggled to form a new nation, the Continental Congress appointed an official national day of fasting and prayer. Although the nation was called to prayer numerous times, it wasn’t until 1952 that President Truman actually declared the first annual National Day of Prayer. Then in 1988 the law was amended and signed by President Reagan, permanently setting the day as the first Thursday of every May.
Locally, several NDP events were organized by Melinda Fredricks, a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in the 1990s and held on the lawn of the Denton Courthouse or around the flagpole at the City Hall courtyard. After not having any local events for several years, the members of Blue Mound UMC picked up the torch in 2009 and have now gone countywide, with yearly gatherings at the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square.
